After an attempt to deliver a speech on unemployment over the noise of the protesters in Hull, Québec, Jean Chrétien had to push a few of them to make his way back to his car.
Along the way, he ended up pulling one by the neck and pushing another on aside. He eventually grabbed Bill Clennet by the throat and sent him to the ground.
The press referred to this gesture as the Shawinigan handshake, named after the prime minister’s birth town.
